Top 7 Things To Do in Avila Beach
If youโre traveling between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Avila Beach is a charming beach town that deserves a stop. Nestled between San Luis Obispo and Pismo Beach on Highway 101, it is quite easy to stop here on the way.
Whenever we take Highway 101 down to LA, we always spend a few hours in Avila Beach. The laid-back, family-friendly vibe of Avila Beach is very relaxing to me.
Whether youโre spending a few hours or an overnight stay, this small coastal town on Californiaโs Central Coast offers something for everyone.
My favorite thing to do at Avila Beach is grab food from Avila Valley Barn or one of the waterfront restaurants and chill at the beach. But if you want to explore further, hereโs my guide to the top things to do in Avila Beach.
1. Avila Beach
The heart of this town is its namesake beach, a beautiful stretch of sand with calm waves perfect for families, paddleboarders, and anyone looking to relax.
There are plenty of parking spots nearby, and the beach itself has a welcoming, laid-back vibe. You can rent beach gear, grab a bite from a local cafรฉ, or just enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean. Swimming, paddle boarding, and surfing are some water activities you can enjoy here.
There’s something very calming and peaceful about this beach, and we have spent great family moments here. I always prefer this beach over Pismo Beach which has a more happening vibe. The rocky bluffs and the pier on the beach give a great background for photos.
2. Avila Beach Pier
The Avila Beach Pier is a great place for a stroll. Extending out into the ocean, it provides fantastic coastline views and is an ideal spot for fishing or watching the sunset.
The pier is also a good vantage point from which to spot marine life, such as sea lions and pelicans. There are two more piers north of the main Avila Beach pier.
3. Front Street
Right across from the beach, Front Street is the main waterfront street here. It is lined with boutique shops, restaurants, and tasting rooms.
Itโs a fun place to browse for souvenirs, enjoy a meal with a view, or sip on some locally made wine. Donโt miss the ice cream and coffee shops for a quick treat. We love to grab some food or ice cream here and picnic at the beach.
4. Avila Valley Barn
Just a short drive from the beach, the Avila Valley Barn is a must-visit, especially if youโre traveling with kids. Itโs a fun stop that gives you a taste of the Central Coastโs agricultural roots.
This farm stand offers fresh produce, homemade baked goods, and family-friendly activities like feeding farm animals or taking a hayride. It also has a restaurant, an ice cream parlor, and a candy shop.
On our last visit we stopped here and had a great time shopping the farm fresh goods and trying the various food items. The corn on the cob and ice cream was yummy! The farm animals are cute, and you can buy lettuce to feed them.
5. Central Coast Aquarium
This small but engaging aquarium is located near the pier and next to Avila Beach Park. The aquarium and the park are great to visit for families with younger kids.
The aquarium focuses on local marine life and interactive exhibits, making it a hit with kids. From touch tanks to educational displays, itโs an informative way to learn about the ocean.
6. Bob Jones City to Sea Trail
The Bob Jones Trail is a scenic, flat pathway perfect for walking or biking. Starting near the 101 Freeway, it winds through lush greenery and along a creek before ending at Avila Beach.
Itโs an easy trail thatโs ideal for all fitness levels and offers plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy nature.
7. Avila Hot Springs
For some relaxation, visit the Avila Hot Springs, located just a few miles from the beach. These natural mineral hot springs have been a local attraction for over a century.
Whether youโre soaking in the hot mineral pool or swimming in their heated freshwater pool, itโs a rejuvenating experience.
More things to do
If you have more time to spend at Avila Beach, here are a few more things to explore.
Point San Luis Lighthouse
Take a guided tour of this historic lighthouse perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The ocean views are spectacular, and the tour provides insight into the areaโs maritime history. As the Lighthouse is on a property owned by Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, the only way to visit is to take a guided tour or hike. Check for details here.
Avila Beach Golf Resort
If golf is your game, the Avila Beach Golf Resort offers a scenic course with ocean views. Itโs a peaceful place to spend a few hours and enjoy the outdoors.
Madonna Inn
On your way to or from Avila Beach, consider stopping at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo.
This quirky hotel is known for its unique themed rooms and bright pink decor. We stayed here overnight once in a Paris-themed room, and it was really nice. Even if youโre not staying the night, their bakery and cafรฉ are worth checking out.
