20 Tips to Maximize your Time at Universal Studios Hollywood
Universal Studios Hollywood is one of those theme parks that looks simple on the map but can feel overwhelming once you are inside. Between the Upper Lot, Lower Lot, long escalators, and popular rides with long wait times, it helps to go in with a plan.
After visiting Universal Studios Hollywood many times over the years with my family, I have learned what actually makes a difference, from when to arrive and where to start, to how to avoid wasting time and energy during the day.
These tips are based on our own visits, with the most recent one in January 2026, and are meant to help you enjoy more rides, spend less time waiting, and have a smoother, less stressful day in the park.

1. Universal Studios Hollywood can be done in a day
Universal Studios Hollywood is much more compact than Disneyland, which makes it one of the easiest major theme parks to visit in a single day. With the right plan, it is very realistic to ride all the main attractions without feeling rushed.
We have been able to do all the major rides on every visit by staying focused in the morning and saving shopping, photos, and wandering through the themed lands for later in the day. If you want a step-by-step plan, you can follow my Universal Studios Hollywood one day itinerary for exactly how we structure our day.

2. Choose the right ticket for your visit
Universal Studios Hollywood tickets are date-specific, so prices change depending on how busy the park is expected to be.
3. Stay within walking distance of the park
Staying close to Universal Studios Hollywood makes a huge difference, especially if you want to arrive early and avoid dealing with parking. We usually stay at the Hilton Universal City, which is right across the street from the park, and can walk to the entrance in under ten minutes.
If you are booking there, the park view rooms on a higher floor are worth it. It is fun to look out over Universal Studios, and it makes those early mornings and late nights feel a little more special.

4. Use the Universal Studios app
Download the official Universal Studios Hollywood app before your visit. It shows real-time ride wait times, park maps, and show schedules, and the park has free Wi Fi so you can keep checking it throughout the day.
You can also use the app for mobile food ordering, which is helpful when restaurants are busy, and you do not want to stand in another line just to grab a meal.
5. Pack light
Keep it light, and if you are carrying a backpack, make it a small one. We learned this the hard way when our backpack did not fit in the free locker at the Harry Potter ride, and we had to pay $5 for a medium locker for one hour. If you have larger bags or luggage, it is best to use the storage rentals near the park entrance instead of carrying everything into the park.

6. Arrive before park opening
The first one to two hours have the shortest wait times. Try to be at the bag check about 30 minutes before the park opens so you can get through security, parking, and even grab photos by the Universal globe before the gates officially open. That early start puts you ahead of most of the crowd once rides begin.
7. Know the park layout before you go
Universal Studios Hollywood is built on a hillside and split into two main areas, the Upper Lot and the Lower Lot, connected by very long escalators. It can take 10 to 15 minutes just to move between them.

Knowing which rides are in each area before you arrive helps you avoid wasting time going back and forth and makes it much easier to plan a smooth day.
8. Start your day in the Lower Lot
The Lower Lot is home to Super Nintendo World, home of the latest Mario Kart ride, Transformers, Revenge of the Mummy, and Jurassic World. This area fills up quickly, so it is best to do it first and avoid going back and forth on the long escalators.

9. Do rides first and explore the lands later
The themed lands are fun to wander, but the morning hours are best used for rides. Save photos, shopping, and exploring places like Super Nintendo World and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter for later in the day.
10. Save the Studio Tour and shows for later
The Studio Tour is a one-hour ride and a great way to rest your feet. Grab a snack or a meal that you can eat in the tram. We get churros and popcorn before boarding the studio tour. WaterWorld and Kung Fu Panda are also good to save for later, once you have finished most of the rides.

11. Use Single Rider lines when wait times spike
Some popular rides, including Mario Kart and Harry Potter, offer Single Rider lines. If your group does not mind being separated, this can save a lot of time.
12. Plan for lockers on some rides
Some rides, including Harry Potter and Revenge of the Mummy, require you to store bags before boarding. The free lockers are very small and are meant for phones and small items, which means even a normal backpack may not fit. Keep your belongings as compact as possible.

13. Wizarding World of Harry Potter tips
The Harry Potter ride is one of the best things to do at Universal Studios, but the Hogwarts walk-through before you even get on the ride is just as fun. The talking paintings, Dumbledoreโs office, and all the castle details make it feel like part of the attraction instead of just waiting in line.
Do not miss the restroom in this land either. It is themed after the girlsโ bathroom from the movie, with ghostly sounds playing inside. It’s really cool! There are also lots of great photo spots in this area, along with the Ollivanders wand show, where one guest is chosen for a wand to pick them.

14. Use Child Switch if traveling with young kids
Child Switch lets adults ride without waiting twice when traveling with babies or toddlers. We used this often when our kids were younger, and it made a big difference.
15. Universal is best for kids five and up
Most of the rides at Universal Studios Hollywood are designed for older kids, teens, and adults, which makes it a better fit for families with kids about five and up. There are a few things for younger kids, like Super Silly Fun Land, DinoPlay, and some character meet and greets, but toddlers and preschoolers will have much fewer ride options compared to a park like Disneyland.

16. Eat where you already are
Because the park is built on a hill, walking between the Upper and Lower Lots takes time. Eating in the land you are already in saves both time and energy. I am also not a fan of big sit down meals in theme parks, so grabbing something quick that we can eat while waiting in line works much better for us.

17. Know which rides are worth prioritizing
Harry Potter, Transformers, the Studio Tour, and Mario Kart, Minions, and The Simpsons are the biggest must-do attractions. If time is tight, start with these before adding smaller rides and shows.

18. Dress comfortably and in layers
You will be walking and standing a lot, so comfortable shoes are a must. Layers also help, since mornings and evenings can feel cool, while afternoons can be warm. If you plan to ride Jurassic World, wear something you do not mind getting wet. Carrying a poncho is a great idea. We had to buy ponchos for $12 each at the park!
19. The park is worth seeing at night
Some parts of Universal Studios Hollywood feel completely different after dark, especially the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World. If you still have energy, it is worth taking a stroll through these areas in the evening when everything is lit up.

20. Do not miss Universal CityWalk
Universal CityWalk is right outside the park entrance and is a fun place to go once you are done with the rides. It has lots of restaurants, shops, and bright screens, and the central area reminds me of a mini Times Square. It is much easier to save shopping and dinner for CityWalk, so you do not lose valuable park time during the day.

Final Takeaways
Universal Studios Hollywood is a popular and fun park, but it works best when you know how to move through it. Arriving early, choosing the right ticket, packing light, and knowing which lot to focus on first can completely change how much you are able to see in one day.
Between Super Nintendo World, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, classic rides like Transformers and Minions, and the Studio Tour, there is a lot packed into a relatively small park. With the right strategy, you really can experience all the highlights without feeling rushed.
