Universal Studios Hollywood One Day Itinerary for First Time Visitors
It is absolutely possible to see most of Universal Studios Hollywood in one day with the right plan.
Universal Studios Hollywood is one of Los Angelesโs most iconic theme parks, with rides and attractions based on famous movies and franchises like Harry Potter, Jurassic World, and now Super Nintendo World.
As a California local, I have visited Universal Studios Hollywood many times over the years with my family. Whenever a big new attraction opens, we usually end up going back. A few years ago, it was The Wizarding World of Harry Potter that pulled us in. This time, it was Mario Kart and Super Nintendo World. In the future, it will be the new Fast and Furious roller coaster that we saw being constructed on the hillside!
This one-day itinerary is designed to help you fit in all the must-do rides and experiences without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Universal is much more compact than Disneyland, which makes it easier to cover in a single day if you go in with a smart plan.
I will share how we structure our day, what to ride first, and where to slow down so you can make the most of your time inside the park. Our most recent visit was in January 2026, so be assured that you are getting current information.

Below are my top recommendations for your visit to Universal Studios:
โก๏ธGet your Universal Studios Hollywood tickets in advance:
- Universal General Admission Tickets
- Universal Express Tickets – get express lane access!
โก๏ธ Stay at Hilton Universal City– right across the street from Universal Studios and walk to the park! This is where we always stay!
Universal Studios Hollywood One Day Itinerary
To make the most of your day at Universal Studios Hollywood, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before the park officially opens. That early window makes a big difference, especially if you want to knock out the most popular rides with the shortest waits.
We used that first quiet hour to head straight into the park and go right down the long escalators to the Lower Lot. Getting there early lets you ride Mario Kart and the other Lower Lot attractions before the lines start stacking up.
Allow yourself time to park and go through security. You can do all this before the park officially opens. You can also take photos near the Universal Studios globe and on the red carpet in front of the Universal Studios entrance gate.
Here is the flow that worked best for us.
Quick Summary of Universal Studios Hollywood itinerary for one day:
- Morning: Lower Lot first. Mario Kart, Transformers, Revenge of the Mummy, Jurassic World
- Afternoon: Upper Lot rides – Simpsons, Harry Potter, Minions, Secret Life of Pets
- Evening: Studio Tour, WaterWorld Show, Kung Fu Panda Show
- Night: Explore Universal CityWalk for dining and souvenir shops.
If you have the Universal Express ticket, you will have access to the Express line for each ride once, so you can be more relaxed with your day! You can still follow the order of attractions in this itinerary.
Morning: Start in the Lower Lot
The Lower Lot is where the newest Mario Kart ride is, so it makes sense to do this area first while crowds are light. Since Mario Kart no longer requires a reservation, you can simply walk straight there at park opening.

Mario Kart: Bowserโs Challenge at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
Mario Kart is the newest ride at Universal Studios Hollywood and the main draw inside Super Nintendo World. You board a kart and race through Bowserโs castle in a 4D competition filled with coins, shells, and familiar Mario characters.

We rode it first thing in the morning with a short wait, which is definitely the way to do it. The headgear was a little heavy and not the most comfortable, especially if you wear glasses.

The ride itself was fun, especially Rainbow Road at the end, but honestly, our whole group felt some of the other rides at Universal were better. That makes it even more important to do Mario Kart early and not let it take over your day.

Super Nintendo World itself is beautifully done and really does feel like you have stepped right inside a Mario video game.
The escalators between the upper and lower lot are really long as the theme park is built on a hill, and it takes around 10-15 minutes to switch between the two lots.

So while you are in the lower lot, it makes sense to finish the other 3 rides there – Transformers, Revenge of the Mummy, and Jurassic World. You can do these in any order, depending on the ride wait times.
Transformers 3D Ride
This is one of our favorite rides at Universal. It is fast, intense, and very immersive, with a mix of 3D visuals and motion that really pulls you into the action alongside Optimus Prime and Bumblebee.

Revenge of the Mummy
The Revenge of the Mummy Ride is an intense indoor roller coaster experience that takes you on a high-speed journey through ancient Egyptian tombs to escape the wrath of the vengeful mummy.
The entire ride was almost entirely in the dark, and to be honest, I was screaming the whole time as there were a lot of sharp turns and drops in total darkness. I am definitely not sitting on this one again! But roller coaster fans will love it, my kids always try to ride it twice!

Jurrasic World – The Ride
This ride has impressive animatronics and builds up to a massive 85-foot drop straight into the water with a T rex coming at you. You will get wet. We were completely soaked, which was actually refreshing on a hot afternoon, but something to skip in winter.

After these rides, grab a quick drink or snack in the Lower Lot. Isla Nu bar is right by Jurassic World, and there is also Studio Scoop for ice cream and a Starbucks. We typically don’t eat breakfast before these fast-paced rides, and get coffee and a pastry from Starbucks before heading back to the Upper Lot.
Afternoon: Upper Lot Rides
Once you are done with the Lower Lot, take the long escalators back up and stay in the Upper Lot for the rest of the afternoon.
If you have the Universal Express pass, you might be able to do all the rides in the Upper lot. With General Admission tickets, pick and choose the ones that interest your group the most.
The Simpsons Ride
The Simpsons Ride is right at the top of the escalators, which makes it a great first stop. It is a motion simulator that takes you on a funny and chaotic ride through Springfield with the whole Simpson family. The thrill level is moderate, and it is a fun change of pace after the bigger rides.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is one of the best rides at Universal Studios Hollywood, and a must-do. You ride through Hogwarts and soar through scenes from the films with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, coming face to face with dragons, Dementors, and other magical creatures along the way. My kids love it, and I do too.

One of my favorite parts of this attraction is actually the walk through Hogwarts before you even board the ride. The queue takes you through detailed castle sets, including the corridor with the talking paintings and Dumbledoreโs office, and it feels like part of the experience instead of just waiting in line.

This ride is very popular, which is why it helps to do it earlier in the day, before wait times get too long.
Flight of the Hippogriff
Right outside the Hogwarts area is Flight of the Hippogriff, a small outdoor roller coaster themed to the Harry Potter world. It is much gentler than Revenge of the Mummy and is especially popular with kids.
If the wait time is not too bad, it is easy to ride this right after Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Otherwise, you can come back later in the evening when the lines can be shorter.
Despicable Me Minion Mayhem
This is a family favorite and a good one to do after Harry Potter World. It is a simulator-style ride with lots of humor and Minion chaos. It is not intense, so it works well for all ages in your group.

The Secret Life of Pets Off the Leash
This is a slower, story-based ride where you move through detailed sets from the movie and see Max, Snowball, and the rest of the pets. It is calm compared to most of the park and a nice break after several thrill rides.

Late afternoon and evening experiences
Once the main rides in the upper and lower lots are done, slow the pace down with some of Universalโs longer sit-and-watch type attractions.
Studio Tour
The Studio Tour is a one-hour tram ride through a real working movie studio, and it is one of the most unique things to do in Universal Studios Hollywood.

You see famous sets and also experience special segments like King Kong 360 3D, the War of the Worlds crash site, and Jaws. It is a great way to rest your feet while still seeing a lot.
WaterWorld Show
WaterWorld is a live stunt show with jet skis, explosions, and big action scenes. It really does feel like watching a movie come to life. If you sit close to the stage, you will get wet. We learned that the hard way when my husband got a full bucket of water dumped on him during the preshow.
Kung Fu Panda
Kung Fu Panda is a fun, air-conditioned motion theater that lets you relax for a bit. If time is tight, this is one you can skip without missing anything major.
Night: Explore Universal CityWalk
After you leave the park, walk over to Universal CityWalk for dinner and shopping. It is right outside the main gates and stays open later than the park.
The big screens and lights remind me of a mini Times Square, and it is a fun place to wander after a full day of rides. You will find everything from Bubba Gump Shrimp Co to Buca di Beppo and casual spots like Panda Express and Habit Burger.
If you still have energy, the Universal Cinema has comfortable reclining seats and is a nice way to end a long day on your feet.

Visiting Universal Studios with younger kids
Universal Studios Hollywood is best for families with kids about five and up, but families with younger kids can still have a good day here with a little planning.
Many of the thrill rides have height requirements, but Universal offers a Child Switch program. Both parents enter the line together, and when you reach the loading area, one adult waits with the child while the other rides. When the first rider is done, the second adult can ride without waiting in line again. We used this all the time when our kids were younger, and it made a huge difference.
For breaks between rides, there are a couple of good play areas for little ones. Super Silly Fun Land in the Upper Lot near Minions has a small kiddie ride, play structures, and a water play area. The Lower Lot also has DinoPlay, a dinosaur-themed play area. You will also see characters like the Minions, Transformers, and Jurassic World dinosaurs out for photos during the day.

There are many more rides and attractions in Disneyland that are toddler-friendly as compared to Universal Studios.
Where to eat at Universal Studios Hollywood
Universal Studios Hollywood has a lot of food options, but these are a few that are worth planning around during a busy park day.

Universal Studios Hollywood tickets
Universal Studios Hollywood offers three main ticket types. All tickets are date specific, so you choose your visit date when booking.
Where to stay for Universal Studios Hollywood
If you want to maximize your day at Universal Studios Hollywood, staying nearby the night before makes a big difference. Being able to walk to the park in the morning saves time, stress, and parking fees.
Hilton Universal City is right across the street, and is where we usually stay when visiting Universal Studios. It is right across the street, and we can walk to the entrance in under ten minutes. Not dealing with parking alone makes it worth it.
The hotel has a nice pool area with cabanas and an on-site restaurant for breakfast. We sometimes book a higher floor room for views of Universal Studios, which is always fun.

Sheraton Universal Hotel is another option within walking distance of Universal Studios Hollywood and is a 4-star hotel. The hotel has a pool and restaurant with breakfast (for a fee) and a range of room and suite options.

Tip: We always try to stay within walking distance of theme parks so that we can maximize our time at the park. When we visit Disneyland, we stay at hotels near Disneyland, which are within 5-10 minutes of walking distance.

Final Takeaways
Universal Studios Hollywood is one of the easiest major theme parks to visit in a single day, especially if you go in with a smart plan. Starting in the Lower Lot, hitting the most popular rides early, and saving the Studio Tour and shows for later in the day makes it much easier to see everything without feeling rushed.
Between Super Nintendo World, Harry Potter, the Studio Tour, and classic rides like Transformers and Minions, there is a great mix of thrills and immersive experiences for both kids and adults. Adding in a walk through CityWalk at night is a fun way to wind down after a long day in the park.
I am already looking forward to going back when the new Fast and Furious roller coaster opens in 2026, which should add another big thrill to the lineup.
